Being Congratulated

October 27, 2011

Peoples’ reactions to a divorce are very interesting to me. I’ve gotten a lot of sympathy and a lot of people asking whether it’s appropriate to congratulate me. And those who have been more involved know well enough to just grin and say they’re glad, or off an unapologetic Congrats!

Congratulating someone on the end of their marriage understandably seems backward to a lot of people. After all, as a number of people have pointed out, you congratulate someone on a wedding – the beginning of a marriage.

The way I see it though, my marriage ended six months and twenty-four days ago. Yesterday wasn’t an end – it was a beginning. And beginnings deserve congratulations!

So much of life is a matter of perspective. I could easily choose to be mourning, wallowing, looking backward. Instead, I choose to focus forward, find the positive around me, and grow. I choose joy.

Dude, you just lost like over 150lbs. This is indeed a new beginning worth a huge congratulations.
Congratulations are also typically given at the end of a long and arduous task or upon a great accomplishment (graduations, for example). In that light, also worth a many congratulations is your ability to have survived and perservered through the ups and down of the last 7 months. This is indeed a huge achievement and I know you have come through it much better than you thought would be possible at the beginning. Things will only continue to get better from here.
So, Congrats to that, and Cheers to the future!

PS. It was nice to finally meet you the other week 🙂

150? Try over 200 – and from what I hear, he keeps putting weight on.

You know what? Slimming down suits me well! haha…

It was great to meet you too. 🙂
